only be explained as an incredibly clumsy PR stunt by Russ Carnahan's
staff, this picture of Russ at the St Louis Police Academy supposedly
firing a pistol ("two of which were pretty close — if not right on —
the bullseye!") is just waiting to be mocked.

Here's the picture, courtesy of the Post Dispatch (though it's not clear if they posted the picture or took it).

I want to make sure that no one is getting firearm safety training from either Russ Carnahan, the Post Dispatch, or any senior police officer who would actually allow this picture to be taken with anything resembling a loaded weapon.

Let's count the mistakes.

1. Always wear protection for your eyes and ears. A gun shot is a very loud noise, and permanent hearing damage can be sustained firing a pistol indoors and so close to other.

2. Never point a gun inside your office. Only use in or at an approved range. This prevents senior police officers standing next to you from being hit in the face by hot steel casings and losing an eye.

3. If you're going to shoot a firearm, don't close both eyes. It's going to make a loud noise. It might even jump in your hand. But if you're afraid of it, don't shoot it.
4. Never point a weapon at a photographer. It is a very bad idea to shoot downrange with a photographer in the line of fire. Even if the photographer is using a zoom lense, mistakes happen, and it is the height of irresponsibility to point in the direction of a human being you do not want dead.

In all seriousness, this is a very bad photo. Anyone who knows gun knows this is a PR setup, and anyone who doesn't know guns is likely to be wetting themself in the corner at the sight of a Democrat holding one. You would think this photo would be bad enough from a newspaper that refuses to give any bad press to Carnahan, but it gets worse.

Jake's story buys the story that Carnahan shot the target three times near the bullseye. A couple things.

1) What was the distance? Shooting a 9mm is easy. At seven yards, anyone can hit the target, and there's not a chance Russ was shooting further than 7 yards. I'll donate $100 to his campaign if he can shoot 15 yards or further inside the 8's. Better yet, let's see how he does with a .45.

2) Who shoots three bullets? Is this the new 3 bullet clip? The very idea that any gun enthusiast would stop shooting after 3 bullets and leave the rest of the clip full is laughable. You don't go to the range and shoot 3 bullets. You don't ask a police officer to borrow their gun for a few shots for a photo op. Either they were at the range, or this was completely made up, and he fired nothing.

3) Update: Commenter Ohkay3 points out something I missed. Those are either very large holes for that 9mm, or this is a very, very tiny target. I'm actually quite curious if this is even a real target. It's closest cousin online is the DOE Green target, but it's not an exact match. Anyone know someone who works with the St Louis Police who can tell us if they use this target on the range?

We're used to the Post Dispatch reprinting Carnahan propaganda and hiding Russ from scorn and ridicule. We know the PD online editors will manipulate headlines to make them Republicans look bad. We know that even when they do report on stories where Russ is featured, they won't mention his name.

That doesn't mean we have to allow the Post Dispatch to print dangerous photos of police officers and Congressman mishandling firearms. At least this explains why they are so terrified of gun violence. I'd be scared too if that's the way people handled weapons around me.

Politico reports that the Cook Report has moved MO-3 from safe Democrat to Likely Democrat. That's good news for likely candidate Ed Martin, who has put in two strong fundraising quarters and is within striking distance of parity in the cash on hand account. Here's the paragraph:

Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.), the brother of Missouri Senate candidate
Robin Carnahan, is suddenly facing his first tough reelection against
attorney Ed Martin, who starts the year with nearly as much campaign
cash as the incumbent. The Cook Report now rates the once-safe seat,
formerly held by former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt, in “likely
Democratic” territory.

It's terrible news for Carnahan, because the Cook Report isn't doing any on the ground analysis. They're looking at money, and voter registration, and history, and likely national mood. In other words, this is just the generic numbers. I'm not aware of any actual polling that has taken place, but MO-3 is different than it's political makeup might suggest. Carnahan is not well-liked. With he and his sister on the ballot, Democratic voters will be forced to pull the lever for two Carnahans, which is something that even the hardiest of partisans has admitted would be difficult to do.

Progressives who supported Jeff Smith are going to be furious at Russ for his role in sending Smith to jail. Fair or not, Russ is the snitch who went to the FEC to complain after he won. And many are going to see the complaint as a way to prevent a 2010 primary between Russ and the popular state senator.

Carnahan is also a target of the St Louis Tea Party, for reasons running from his 100% voting with ACORN, Pelosi, and Obama, his failure to read bills before voting on them, his fiscal ineptitude, his lies about healthcare, and of course, the townhalls where his SEIU supporters and bankrollers sent out thugs to confront Tea Party activists.

Ed Martin has been doing retail politicking in the district, shaking hands and holding Ask Ed Anything sessions. Russ has been a no-show, popping up on the radar with little announcement and generally failing to do much to show he wants the seat. Like his sister, Russ is running a Rose Garden strategy in a year when meeting voters is a crucial part of victory. Carnahan was never a strong politician, and as the year moves quickly by, his attempts to regain standing.

Expect Russ to try and boost fundraising, but in a year when Democrats are hurting all over, the cash advantage won't be overwhelming. Democrats are pouring money into Ike Skelton's district. Can they do the same for a supposedly safe Russ? The only solution will be for Carnahan to get as nasty as possible, attempting to use the cover of the local media to run a campaign using third parties.

The problem is Russ is a typical incumbent - tone deaf and without charisma or loyalty. With unemployment high, will voters really fall for a campaign of "My opponent is so evil, you better not vote for him?"

We know this. Russ can't run on his accomplishments, his plans, or his character. And he can't count on outside help from his sister or the national Democrats. In the end, he's going to have to face Martin one-on-one, in front of the public. And that's a position no Carnahan enjoys.

Sorry about that. I just had to work "glitterbomb" into the title. Russ Carnahan is out begging for money from the gay community - pushing a really poorly designed flyer out to his constituents asking them to come "Show their love for Russ." As pathetic as it is to throw yourself a party and announce to the world that it's a party thrown for you, it's actually quite insulting that Carnahan is reaching out for money from the GLBT community.

What has he done for them? Nothing. Don't ask me - ask the largest gay group in New Jersey what they think.

Largest Gay Group in New Jersey stops donating to Democrats. Ouch. That has to hurt. In an election cycle that is already made challenging for Democrats, it's got to sting to realize that the groups who march in step with Democrats are waking up and realizing that voting in a block isn't helping them.

My goodness - can you imagine in groups of Democrats in the city of St Louis realized that the Carnahan family has done nothing for them either? Why - it's enough to make you write a flyer where you attempt to scare gays into giving you money.

Oh, wait.

His likely opponent, Ed Martin, is a conservative Republican who opposes GLBT rights.

That's interesting. I'm not aware of any statements Martin has made that would support such a statement. Is it that he's a conservative Republican? oohhh, scary!

Using your opponent's name in a fundraising flyer isn't what a confident campaign in a safe Democratic district does. Just how bad is it over at the Rubberstamp Headquarters?

Maybe it's his staff. Picking a frozen vodka bar for a fundraiser the day after Valentine's Day is pretty weak. Is that supposed to be a slap in the face to gay marriage proponents?

Why not throw a fundraiser on Valentine's day? Or better yet, have your candidate show up to any number of groups throwing events in and around Valentine's day to show your support of GLBT issues.

And if you can't show up in person, how about a single statement - just one - somewhere on your government or campaign site showing your support for these issues?

At some point, support for your constituents has to mean more than simply appearing at fundraisers and events where you get your picture taken. But homosexuals shouldn't feel bad about it. He's not singling them out. He treats all of the voters like this. So shut up and give him money. Otherwise, a scary Republican might get elected in your district and work to improve the economy. And really, who needs jobs and fiscal sanity these days? We should be focusing on what is important - dividing Americans by their sexual identity so they vote the right people into office.

Those windmills aren't going to build themselves.

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/24thstate/~4/WP7OWrt_CUc" height="1" width="1"><xhtml:img />

The campaign finance reports for came out today. I'm so glad they're online now. Makes the data super fast to analyze.

I was here in the office, so I real quick glanced through the Martin/Carnahan race. Russ outraised Ed Martin, but in a very strange way. The first thing you notice is that Martin beat Carnahan in the individual contributions list. That's a strong sign of support in an anti-incumbent year. Russ has something like 65% of his contributions from PACs (much higher than the total of Roy Blunt, which led the Post Dispatch to report on Blunt's total), but the stranger thing is how much money came in the last three days of the reporting period.

$31,550 dollars came into Russ Carnahan from individual contributions from December 29-31, 2009 That's a ton of dough on the last three days, and either he was burning up the phones, or he was sending bike messengers out in the bitter cold.

$43,100 came into his campaign from PAC contributions in the last three days from December 29-31. That too is a lot of dough, and it makes the story curiouser. It also shows how desperate he was to get ahead.

$74,650 came in the last three days of the quarter, almost a third of his total. Was it his birthday? Did he throw a party and not tell anyone? Was he looking at his numbers and realizing he couldn't afford to get beat in fundraising twice in a row?

I'll tell you this. When you're asking for money, it doesn't always come in on time, but it has to be received by the 31st to count in this quarter. A great example is the St Louisans for Better Government PAC, which gave $2500 to Russ back on August 5th. Russ reported it on August 12th. It took a week to get to him and get deposited. How did he raise so much money so fast? That should be fun to follow up with and compare. I've got a group of moms dying to get at those numbers. I hope they all match up. It's a really bad idea to count pledges or checks that didn't arrive on the quarter before. Goes against the whole transparency and honest government ethic. But let's talk about that in three months. No matter what his reports, the next quarter is going to be tougher to raise money for ol' Rubberstamp. He can't go to the well too many times before his donors start wondering why he's always in a panic come the last day.

I made you wait a day, but it was well worth it to find out that the second Secretary of State employee to leave Robin Carnahan's employ and head to America Votes was actually her Chief of Staff, Mindy Mazur. Again, I'm going to have to thank FiredUpMissouri, whose job posting system once again led me right to the evidence.

Mazur was the Missouri State Director for America Votes while the League of Conservation Voters was running attack ads against Roy Blunt and Blue Dog Democrats Mike Ross and John Barrow. That was a strange decision. Of all of the votes in Congress to attack, why pick two conservative Democrats and Roy Blunt? Blunt is not a squishy moderate that an ad would work on - but he was running against Mindy's once and future boss. And the decision to air ads outside of Blunt's congressional district tells us it was about the upcoming Senate race, and not Blunt's vote against cap and trade.

The answer is pretty clear. While Robin was laying low, Mindy's job was to coordinate the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent attacking Blunt outside of his district. It allowed the Carnahan campaign to engage Blunt without having to actually get out there and work for it. Call it a "shadow campaign," orchestrated by the woman who is Robin's most important resource.

Mindy worked at America Votes until she was "reassigned" to come back and take over as campaign manager for the Robin Carnahan for Senate campaign. She went from Chief of Staff to America Votes to Campaign Manager. The only way the
connection could have been closer would be for Robin to direct the
television ads herself from her secret underground lair. Mindy now has the national connections to assist the Carnahan campaign - and a loyal servant in Paula Hodges to keep it all nice and legal.

This was the golden plan to get elected. Coast on the success of the 2008 election campaign, keep Robin above the fray, and use loyal Missouri state government employees to coordinate the third party attacks. Mindy herself even tries to play up the strategy, talking about a campaign tired of "the same old partisan attacks and politics as usual," and then complaining about how much money the Blunt campaign will have. This is the campaign update posted on the Carnahan YouTube channel.

There's no mention of the third party attack ads that Mindy was tasked with coordinating. Just an "aw shucks", down-home couple of gals trying to do right by the people. Contrast Mindy's cynical attempt to be above the fray with the truth of how the Carnahan campaign is run, and you see yet another Missouri Democrat saying one thing and doing another.

We're used to Democrats playing the moderate in Missouri, but we're not having it anymore. America Votes represents the Far Left of the country. It includes all of our favorites, from ACORN and SEIU to Emily's List and Planned Parenthood. The organization is simply a larger version of the ACT program in Missouri, which gave us Sara Howard, Buffy Wicks, race-baiting flyers and the largest election fine in history for spending $100 million in soft money on third party attack ads and coordination.

Carnahan's staff and campaign now lie exposed as part of the progressive infrastructure that has just been repudiated in NJ, VA, and MA. Missouri almost bought that lie in 2008 - but they're regretting it. We won't fall for it again.

Perhaps we could respect Robin Carnahan if she simply campaigned on her beliefs. I don't fully understand why politicians like Robin can't simply say yes, they're into the way left fringe stuff. It's not that she thinks we're stupid - it's that she thinks we just don't know any better, so if she has to lie to get into office, well, it's for our own good. That kind of attitude is what has led so many of us to oppose her for national office. She should embrace her ties to ACORN and other progressive organizations, and let the voters decide if that's the kind of Senator they want.

But enough hiding. Bring on the sunlight.

Republican candidate for Missouri’s 3rd U.S. House seat, Ed Martin, is hosting the Carnahan Town Hall. From Ed Martin:

As you may be aware, I asked Congressman Russ Carnahan to arrange to have a final town hall before voting for any health care bill. Getting no response, I asked folks to sign an online petition requesting that he make that effort. Many of us are deeply concerned about the impact this bill will have both on quality, affordability and availability of health care services far into the future. I believe we deserve more than a slick brochure mailed to us at our own expense by way of explanation.

I decided to arrange a meeting place, and would like to invite anyone who would like to hear Congressman Carnahan to attend. I do ask that you RSVP, online. We simply want to get a headcount and make sure there is room.

So let’s rekindle the spirit of August at Ed Martin’s ”Carnahan Healthcare Town Hall” on Thursday.

If that’s not reason enough to come out, check out this summer-like forecast from Accuweather.com:

Yesterday, Jamie Allman and Dana Loesch interviewed Senator Claire McCaskill. Dana pointed out to the Senator that, by shoving socialized medicine down Missouri voters’ throats, she’s going to face a massive backlash in 2012. McCaskill responded with phony indignation and predictable hypocrisy, giving us even more reasons to destroy her political career in 2012.

Dana’s right about McCaskill losing her job. And Senator McCaskill’s self-righteous, arrogant response deserves the scorn of the people. Claire McCaskill is a wily and shrewd political creature, but she’s also petulant and dictatorial. She believes in telling you to live by the rules she hands down.

Now, please let’s forget about Claire McCaskill for a little while.

McCaskill is not up for re-election in 2010. She’s making the media circuit now precisely to draw fire away from vulnerable Democrats who ARE at risk in 2010. The more time we spend on McCaskill, the less time we spend defeating statist Democrats like the Carnahan Crime Family. Dana’s job is to call out politicians on the air and on her blog. The rest of us have a singular purpose: to overturn control of Congress in 2010. If we do not accomplish this mission, the 2012 election will have no meaning. Democracy in America will have ended before McCaskill stands for re-election.

If you want to hurt McCaskill, make her a member of the minority party in the Senate. Here’s how you can do that:

1. Help Scott Brown win the Senate race in Massachusetts. Donate money. Make phone calls.

2. Help Ed Martin defeat that babbling idiot, Russ Carnahan for Missouri’s 3rd Congressional District seat.

3. Help defeat Robin Carnahan in her bid to replace Kit Bond in the U.S. Senate.

4. Help Tea Party candidates for the Missouri legislature (Paul Curtman, Gary Fuhr, Cynthia Davis)

The 2010 election is our last chance to save the Republic at the ballot box. If we do our job this year, Claire McCaskill’s statist arrogance will be irrelevant. She’ll be nothing but a squawking malcontent in the discredit party of tyranny where she belongs.

Then in 2012, we’ll sweep her out of office.

(And beautiful work, Dana. Congratulations.)

*UPDATE* I should have held for this: The Interview on Dana Radio
