Help End Government Abuse in Illinois
October 3, 2015 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am
From Andrew Carruthers, past President of Collinsville (Illinois) Area Recreation District:
Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD) and its activities over its 25 year existence. What began as a park district organized for the purpose of providing a steady revenue source to support Collinsville’s park system has grown into a massive empire of spending, high property taxes, and over $20 million in long-term bond debt.
Over the past 5 years many of us have successfully fought to reform CARD by curtailing the excessive spending and attempting to get its debt under control. While the existing Board and the current Executive Director have done a great job for the taxpayers, the situation they inherited is unsustainable without higher taxes or more debt. Fortunately, there is a better way to provide parks and recreation services to the Collinsville area while lowering taxes and improving our parks.
A group has been organized for the purpose of putting a question to the voters in the coming election. “Shall the Collinsville Area Recreation District be dissolved?” This group includes the leadership of several of the affected municipalities, our state legislators, our representatives on the County Board, Countywide officials, and many others. We need to circulate petitions and collect approximately 6,000 signatures to get the referendum on the ballot. Please join us in this effort by helping collect signatures and give the voters a choice as to whether CARD should continue or whether it should dissolve and allow the municipalities to operate the park system.
We will hold a press conference to announce the kickoff of our effort this Thursday October 1 at 11:00 a.m. in front of CARD’s facility, 10 Gateway Drive, Collinsville. There will also be an organizational meeting for circulators this Saturday morning (10/3) at 8:30 a.m. at the Maryville Community Center, 500 East Division Street, Maryville,Illinois. At the meeting on Saturday we will discuss the effort and distribute petitions and walk lists. Please reply to this email and let us know if you are interested in helping and/or if you plan to attend on Saturday. Please forward to anyone you believe may be interested in helping with this effort.
