Repealing the 17th Amendment Is A Hard Sell
Over at The Missouri Record, David Linton argues in favor of repealing the 17th Amendment which allows the direct election of Senators. I agree, but I think this is going to be a hard sell to the American public which has come to believe that the key to an open government is more and more transparency and direct accountability of officials, where more and more citizen votes means better and better government. Of course, this more accountable system allows incumbents to go to Washington, vote for government expansion for five years, and return home just before the election to claim…

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – With three missions now complete, the Missouri National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Teams may literally be turning Afghan swords into plowshares.
Deployed on its mission to Afghanistan since last September, 47 members of the guard’s third successive Agribusiness Development Team returned to central Missouri Sunday where Adjutant General Stephen [...]

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Members of Missouri’s congressional delegation are on their way back to Washington D.C. to vote on a state stimulus package aimed at plugging holes in education and Medicaid budgets.
The House will meet in special session Tuesday to vote on a measure passed by the Senate last week that will provide $26 [...]
McCaskill Not Only Out Of Touch With Constituents, Apparently Not Visiting Reality For Town Hall Meetings Enough Either
The Springfield News-Leader put a piece above the fold front page on Sunday that highlighted the differences between Senator Claire McCaskill and Senator Kit Bond. I’m a little unclear whether this remark is the setup or the punchline for a joke: McCaskill’s office said that while she and Bond sometimes cancel out each other’s votes, it’s usually because McCaskill opposes spending bills that go too far or legislation that isn’t fully paid for. "When the two senators differ in their voting, Sen. McCaskill is the one coming down on the side of fiscal responsibility," spokeswoman Maria Speiser said. Uh huh….

Analysis: The Symbolism and Reality of Proposition C
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — From the New York Times, to CNN, to Reuters, Proposition C’s passage was big news. GOP National Chairman Michael Steele weighed in, as did the Obama administration.
Seventy-one percent of Missourians who went to the polls in the state’s primary election Tuesday voted in favor of the proposal that would put state [...]
All Hail Claire McCaskill, Fiscal Conservative
Headline: McCaskill touts new law on improper payments. Story: Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill says a new law that she co-sponsored could help recover billions of dollars of improper federal payments. … It’s estimated that federal agencies made around $100 billion of improper payments last year. Those payments range from outright fraud to checks issued to the wrong person or for the wrong amount because of a typo. I would almost fall for this bit of theatre if I didn’t realize that Senator McCaskill has voted for the stimulus programs, Obamacare, and every other measure that increased the size of the…
Claire McCaskill On Obama Approval: We Oversold Him And You People Are Stupid
Claire McCaskill is out doing damage control on the sinking Obama approval ratings. Check this out. “The bar for change was set inordinately high by the tone of the presidential campaign,” said McCaskill, an early supporter of Obama’s who endorsed him over then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in January 2008. First let’s pause to remember that Claire was the backchannel to the Obama campaign before her "story" about her daughter making her come out for Obama. She’s been in his camp all along. In fact, it’s fair to say her "support" for Obama was a carefully calculated political move lacking…

Exclusive: Senator McCaskill Apologizes For Staffer’s Comments
I received a pleasant email this morning from the office of Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO). Hi, Senator McCaskill asked me to send you the following statement in response to a video posted on your blog yesterday. "I’m embarrassed. I apologize. The words used by a member of my staff were wrong and do not reflect my opinion. I respect the right of every Missourian to express their opinion, and calling them names for using their First Amendment rights is flat wrong. The staff member who made this mistake will be disciplined," McCaskill said. The email and apology were the result…
