Quote of the Day: Cardetti: “Just Like Missouri Families, State Government Has Had to Tighten Its Belt”

After Rod Jetton’s performance today after testifying before a grand jury. The comments he gave reporters after his grilling have left us wondering if “Hot Rod” Jetton really thinks we’re as stupid as he seems to believe we are. Jetton kept up his pathetic and unbelievable defense yesterday that he’s done nothing wrong: “I deferred it [...]Another Perspective on the Census
Yesterday we presented a suggestion about filling out the U.S. Census this year. It is obvious that the only question dictated by the United States Constitution is that of how many persons are living in a household. RedState had a slightly different perspective in its blog yesterday that is a good read for the purpose of perspective. It’s often helpful to hear multiple sides of an argument before making an informed decision.
Reading our site here and the right-leaning blogosphere there is a lot of anxiety out there about the 2010 decennial census.
During the 2000 decennial I was an employee of the Census Bureau, I don’t put that out as a boast or qualification but rather in the interests of full disclosure, and I’d like to give you my perspective.
The census is required by the Constitution. If fact, if one is a supporter of originalism it is actually one of the few domestic functions of the federal government extant today that is required. It’s purpose is to ensure the mathematical integrity of the House of Representatives and prevent the United States from being infested with a system of rotten boroughs and unrepresented cities which was common in England at the time.
Now a strong case can be made that the Census long form is very intrusive. It its defense one can only point out that a) every question asked is required by federal law to be asked, b) everyone in the Census Bureau knows that the long form is too long, and c) we’ve been on this glide path ever since the Census started asking the names of members of households, their ages, occupations, and places of birth in 1850. One also has to point out that governments at all levels make decisions about schools, hospitals, representation, roads, zoning, land use, etc. based on the federal census. The fact that you don’t like some of those programs or uses of census data is really not germane, the question is do you want those programs to operate based on good information or not-so-good information.
Having said that, there is no legal requirement that you be participate. US Marshals are not going to show up and take you away to be waterboarded if you refuse to participate. If you chose not to, eventually a low-paid, temporarily employed, human enumerator will show up at your house to chat with you. If you turn them away they’ll ask your neighbors the questions about your household that you refuse to answer. So while you have the choice to not cooperate you really don’t have the choice of not being enumerated. It is for that reason that while I am philosophically in tune with the whole declare-your-race-as-American idea (other than the fact that American is a nationality not a race), I think it is doomed to be crushed by the process of physical interviews of households and their neighbors.
Everyone has to use their own prudential judgment in deciding whether or not they will cooperate with the Census. But as you are making that decision you have to decide for yourself how not cooperating moves our cause forward one whit.
There you have it. I confess. I’m a big government squish. I’m a fan of the Census Bureau. I can’t imagine how a developed society functions without a regular census (if you use MapQuest or have a GPS device in your car you also need to think about who actually keeps that underlying database of addresses linked to GPS grid coordinates up to date). My family will participate and do so apologetically. Your choice is yours.
Project Vote Feared It Couldn’t Sue Without Carnahan’s Help
Ron Berry came to Secretary of State Carnahan's office through Missouri Pro-Vote, a far left group with heavy ties to ACORN and SEIU. In 2007, he was extremely helpful to Project Vote's Michael Slater and ACORN's Jeff Ordower, proving them timely access to information, including research into quotations from Republicans.
But that's not the worst of it. Berry was considered a safe bet to pass confidential information to inside Carnahan's office. This string of emails from October 28, 2008 is a smoking gun showing how the most radical elements of Carnahan's staff kept information from lawyers involved in gathering information for a pending lawsuit on voter rolls.
This email thread discusses a press release to be sent out threatening litigation if Project Votes demands are not met. It involves ACORN, Project Vote, the Advancement Project, and a public relations firms called Massey Media. The people involved are deciding on whether or not to use the threat of litigation in the press release to put additional pressure on the Jackson County Board of Elections.
Nicole Kovite of Project Vote dissents, stating that the threat of litigation may shut off her communications with Secretary of State lawyers who are crucial in gathering information to bring the lawsuit.
She says,
If the SOS does not answer my questions about this procedure, we may not have enough information to bring a lawsuit at all right now. I am very concerned that if this press release goes out with the paragraph that mentions litigation, that the SOS will not return my calls and we will be cut off from some very important information.
Simply stated, a press release leak about litigation may prevent us from bringing a lawsuit at this point.
That is some damning material. Kovite is clear that threats of litigation will stop the lawsuit from going forward.
And then the unthinkable happens. Jeff Ordower forwards the entire email thread to Ron Berry in Robin Carnahan's office, with instructions not to reply to this email. The email is sent to his blackberry, and it's clear that Ordower is under the mistaken impression that this thread won't show up in a Sunshine Request if Berry doesn't reply.
Big Mistake. Huge.
In forwarding this email, Ordower is giving Ron Berry access to information that Project Vote plans to sue. Why does Ordower feel that Berry won't immediately take this to higher ups and shut down communication with Nicole Kovite? Why is Berry given insider information that was just discussed as damaging to Kovite's research?
There is no question as to why. They know Berry will pass it on only to the right people inside Robin Carnahan's office.
This is the price you pay for hiring far left wing radicals into your staff. The next question is what is to be done about it.

2,500 People Greet the President in Protest in Down Town St. Louis
About 2,500 Tea Party Patriots assembled across from the Grand Renaissance Hotel tonight in St. Louis to Greet the President in Protest over his Health care Legislation. There were also about 400-700 Supporters of the President from numerous groups ranging from HCAN, JWJ, Repower America and the President's group Organizing for America.
At one time during the evening, the two groups floated into the street toward each other forcing the police to send the groups back to their respective street corners.
Through the evening there were numerous chanting matches between the two groups with the Tea Party corner winning everyone.
Eventually the Tea Party group moved to the other corner of their designated block to get closer to where the President would be leaving the event. This left the Leftest Groups with no one to play with and essentially nullified their effectiveness. This spawned the nights only violence when a supporter of the President's Health Care Plan forced his way into the Tea Party crowd and pushed a female Tea Party Protester. The Police hauled the man off before any more trouble could ensue. The incident was caught on camera by Tea Party Blogger Adam Sharp. Once Adam has posted his video of the incident I will post it here.
I left the event around 7:30 P.M. after almost all of the Leftest groups had left. But there were still about 500 Tea Party Patriots on Scene to give the President a proper going away Present.
The memory that the last thing he sees leaving Down town St. Louis will be a group of people waving Big Yellow Flag with the Words...
Don't Tread On ME.
