How Much Can You Hide in a 2,000 Page Bill?
“Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”
–President Obama, January 2009
Not so much.
The president recently signed into law a new financial regulation law. Nothing wrong with that—minus a recently uncovered provision that basically exempts the SEC from the Freedom of Information Act. In short, the public can’t request documents from the SEC. How transparent.
Citizens should have extensive oversight of government agency—the fact that the SEC can deny anyone documents without giving a reason flies right in the face of the promise that this would be the most transparent administration ever. To be fair, though, it was buried under 2,000 pages of law—which is another issue in itself.
This is a country of the people, by the people, and most importantly, for the people—and the people are completely disregarded as a result of this bill. Very few congressmen have spoken out against this bill, and the media have been virtually silent.
Where’s the outrage?
Where are we heading?
